For all keen walkers, the island offers great opportunities for practicing their favourite sport while discovering Lanzarote. The Cabildo Insular (Island Government) established some fixed senderos (footpaths) to promote rural tourism on the island. Especially built for walkers these footpaths include many newly created and several ancient paths that the early inhabitants once used to get around.

Desportos aquáticos Lanzarote

With the warm climate and clear waters, water sports are very popular here in Lanzarote, from surfing, wind surfing, Jet Ski, parascending, to sailing.

In the area of Puerto Del Carmen you’ll find the place to arrange your sailing trip, whether it’s sailing to another island or sailing close to shore.

Windsurfing schools are available on the island so even as a beginner you can have the opportunity to try this sport, with a basic understanding in just one day. For those more experienced wind surfers, the island provides varied conditions throughout the year so you can choose the best time of year and also the best spot. There are many surf bars where you can ask about the best spots, conditions etc.

Surfing and body boarding can also be done all year round. The best places can be found in Famara and for the more experienced Ozola. Both these places are situated on the north coast. The north of the island is very popular for surfing but ensure you know the area.

Other water sports like parascending, banana boats and Jet Ski can be found at the local beaches.

To experience Lanzarote at its best you have to take a tour of the island. There are many tours that can be arranged. If you want to take in some of the history then a place to start to explore would be the ancient capital Teguise. Visit the Castillo Santa Barbara, a fort that once protected Teguise, and then there is the restored merchant’s house Palacio Spinola and Castillo San Jose.

Discover the natural beauty of Lanzarote; of the beaten track you will take a look at Las Nieves which sits on the top of Risco de Famara, El Balcon de Femes a lovely traditional village, or the Valley of 1,000 Palms. These places are only a few of the excellent places to visit. All guide tours can be arranged locally.

Mergulho Ilhas Canárias

There is a lot of coastline (1491km) on the Canary Islands in proportion to the surface area. The geographic position of the Islands and the influence of the high pressure area over the Azores give the canaries a sunny and stable climate. There can be a great difference in weather between the north and south of each island due to the changes in altitude. With the exception of a few short storms, we have the ideal conditions for our favourite sport Scuba Diving.

The Canary Island waters are oceanic, benefiting from the Gulf Stream. This stream to a degree is what regulates the water temperature in these areas. This varies from a low of 19c in the winter and up to 25c in the summer. The further away from the African coast the cooler the water will become, for example the waters of El Hierro will be slightly cooler than of Lanzarote. These changes are an important factor as they affect the distribution of the marine species.

Although the Canary Islands are close to the African coast the waters here produce very little plankton, which makes them some of the clearest waters in the world, with visibility exceeding 30m at certain times of the year. Only in the spring you will find some vegetable plankton growth, this will only affect the visibility slightly.

In the Canary Islands you will find many different species depending on geographic position, water temperature, where the currents come from and also the composition of the sea bed. You will see both North Atlantic species (including tropical and sub tropical) and Mediterranean species, the ability to propagate has enabled them to establish themselves here. You can also find some Endemic species, found no where else in the world.

With the world ever changing we need to protect and conserve nature. With this in mind the Canary Islands have many marine reserves and more are being planned by the regional Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for the future.

Taking all the above into account you could not ask for a better place to dive, with so many different species and so many different types of topography, caves, wrecks and shore dives you can dive a different place everyday.

Here in Lanzarote the visibility ranges depending on the time of year, however you would expect a minimum of 20m or more. The water temperature ranges from 18ºC in the winter to 24ºC in the summer. With these conditions in mind the diving is ideal for everyone from a beginner to an advanced diver.

Montagem à cavalo Lanzarote

Passeio do barco Lanzarote

An ideal way to see the Island is from a boat. With most of the trips leaving from Puerto del Carmen, playa Blanca or Puerto Calero in the southern part of the island, however in the north a few trips do leave from Orzola.

On Lanzarote you will also find a Pirate ship that offers daily trips. Many of the boats have glass bottoms which allow you to view all marine life in comfort, and if you would like to experience the underwater world without getting wet then you may want to try the submarine tour.
